Jim joined the army at 19 years of age and served for 27 years attaining the respected rank of WO1. Like his father Clarence who served with 2nd Light Horse WW1, Jim was also mounted in 3 Cav as well as commanding a Centurion tank in Vietnam during his 3 tours. He also operated during the Malayan emergency with infantry.
Although born in the Kimberley region of Western Australia Jim identified as a Yindjibarndi warrior as his grandmother Carribung and mother Gladys's people, are from the Millstream area of the Pilbara.
After Jim retired he teamed up with fellow Aboriginal digger Ken Colbung when they obtained a grant to have headstones put to the graves of Indigenous serviceman in Western Australia who had none.
The Army was Jim's life and he was a proud soldier, among his honor's was the "Cross of Gallantry" awarded by the President of South Vietnam.
